SOLD: Unusual Ersatz Felt Prussian Helmet with Leather Back Spine

Offered for sale is a WW1 Veteran bring-back helmet I acquired from the family of the veteran several years ago. There is a tie string attached old paper tag with incorrect identification of the helmet, tied to the wearer's right side of the helmet. Named to a R.A. Kelty, who was from Minnesota.

This ersatz helmet has the seldom-seen feature of a leather back spine. I have only seen 3 or 4 of this type of helmet over all my years of collecting.

The felt is the thin type, and it could use a steaming to bring the front top area back into a stiffened state. The leather back spine runs underneath the back area of the spike base, and it pushes the front area of the spike base downward into the soft, thin felt top of the helmet.

The gray trimmed leather chinstrap actually came with this helmet, directly from the family.

Both Kokardes are Original.

Unusual feature of the leather back spine is that it continues on the inside of the felt helmet body, as seen in photos.

There are 3 or 4 edge splits on the body of the felt helmet, on the left and right wearer's side, as seen in my photos.
