Saxon officer’s pickelhaube

Earlier today I ran into a picker friend, who said he had purchased a spike helmet from a German family and thought I might be interested in it. So, we went to his house and this is what he produced. Now, I’m nowhere near as knowledgeable about these things as most members here, but this appears to be a Saxon officer’s private purchase pickelhaube. As you’ll see, it’s not in terrible shape, but is missing its silk lining and national kokarde. I’m also not sure I like the holes for the wappen. Would love to know the group’s thoughts!

It looks like an parts helmet. The shell is for officer’s, as well as the spike and rear spine. The attachment elements of the spike, on the other hand, the Saxon star and the Saxon cockade are for enlisted men. Furthermore, the chinscales don’t belong to this helmet, because they are way to long. To complete this helmet you will need to find…
  • shorter chinscales (raised chinscales should rest on the upper edge of the front visor),
  • a pair of Saxon style officer cockades (Imperial and Saxony),
  • an officer’s version of the Saxony star,
  • 4 officer (star) attachment elements to attach the spike.
  • (maybe a new liner fabric?)
However, because of the double holes at the front I wouldn’t invest too much money and drop at least the new liner fabric from the list.
If you will buy the helmet, I wish you good luck to find all these parts 🫡

Well, that’s disappointing, but thank you Sandmann just the same for the great information!
 
Sandy is spot on. For Saxon officers, I personally like the angled front visor, just me. I try to avoid double holes as much as I can, but if double holes is a result of the change of wappan , example the old grenadiers eagle wappens to the wide wing grenadier, I am ok with that.

I’m more disappointed in myself than anythings else for not spotting the problems with the helmet that Sandmann listed, which now seem so obvious. The helmet only cost $150, which I’ll consider an educational expense!
 
Good price for the parts for sure. That cockade is probably worth at least that much. Not to mention the wappen etc.
 
I like it, it makes for a great display piece! normally chin scales are too short but you have them too long! $150 is as cheap as chips its worth a lot more. Thank your picker buy him a drink in case he finds more stuff. If he sold it to you for $150 he probably bought it for $50. Don't people watch antiques programmes! Rob

Thanks, Bobted. I have to admit, when I saw the haube was an officer’s, and Saxon, I got excited. My friend’s story that this was a family piece made me think it MUST be correct. I guess it’s true that people see what they expect to see, or want to see. I know I was blinded to this helmet’s issues! Still, I’m glad this turned out not too badly, as I know it’s easy to get burned badly in this hobby.
