Hi, I'm new here. Can I buy this helmet, probably the M15 model? I would like to ask if you could tell me more about this helmet and whether it is original. Thank you very much for your opinions.

Hi David, the shell is original, maybe a little rough.

It appears the chinstrap has been replaced. I do not know about the cockades, leaning towards no, but perhaps someone has more surety than I do.

Gabe

I agree with Gabe on this, also, the front visortrim is still in brass. It could be a nice one though.(A reworked M95, turned into an M15)

Regards, Coert.

The chin strap is definitely too small for the helmet and may be an add on. However, the patina on all fittings matches and the fittings are still tight to the shell as they were originally ie. the piece has not shrunk due to environmental conditions. The liner shows use and is original. The kokarden look fine to me and they are on the correct M91 posts...Prussian (black/white) on the left and Reich above the right ear. These side posts holding the chin strap were introduced in 1891 so we call them M 91's. This helmet sure looks a lot better than my first helmet which was also a model 1915. As to the brass visor trim, I have never seen that before but I have seen brass M91 posts on an M15 so this could be fine. Are there any ink stamp markings on the inside of the rear visor or up in the shell?

Thank you very much for answer. There are any ink stamp markings on the inside of the rear visor, but they are illegible.
So is the chin strap a copy?
The helmet was found in Italy

Can I still buy this Bavarian helmet that I don't know much about. It looks like new and is relatively expensive. I'm afraid it's a fake.

It's an original.
Invest in reference books to learn about it. No one can take your knowledge away.
Thank you.
yes you are right, I have already ordered this book and I am looking forward to studying it.
Unfortunately, before the book arrives and I gain knowledge from the book, the helmets will be sold. In my country, pickelhabe is a rarity for sale

It is, like Amy said, a nice original reserve officers pickelhaube. You are right, better to ask here before you buy a helmet, and later find out it isn't what it was said it was. Fakes are common. But good reference books can also prevent you from buying a fake helmet.

While you wait for your first reference book....pay a visit to The Kaiser's Bunker and do some research/learning. This is the best English language website about pickelhauben on the internet. We also have an area here on the forum that deals specifically with recommended reference books, so take a look there. Welcome to the forum, you have been very wise to show us potential purchases and we can happily save you from wasting your hard earned cash in the future. 👍 :)

Chinstrap and liner string aside, the wear and patina on this example all look very commensurate. Has a nice barn/loft find appearance to it which I find quite appealing.

Please don’t fall into the trap of feeling like you have to buy something before they all disappear. I know the feeling especially when starting out, but rest assured there is plenty out there to go around and Pickelhaubes coming into and going out of collections all the time. As said above, better to take your time, pickup nice original pieces and enjoy the journey.

Digger.
