Brodie Helmet With Unknown Flash

41st Infantry Division, A.E.F..

I wouldn't call that 41st Infantry Div, A.E.F. insignia.

I can see why you're thinking that, but it really is not the insignia of the 41st Div, A.E.F. It has very significant differences.

The insignia Peter shows on this helmet is painted onto the side of the helmet, which is not the usual norm location for A.E.F. insignia. One exception that comes to mind is that of the 89th A.E.F. Div, which is often times seen painted on both sides of the helmet, instead of on the front of the helmet.

41st Div A.E.F. insignia consists of a yellow color half circle sun set upon a blue horizon, with yellow pointed sun rays protruding from the half circle sun. The background color for the arc shaped 41st Division insignia is red, which is absent on this painted insignia.

The insignia on this helmet is a red "sun", with blue or green color "rays" that have flat ends.

Thank you for the insight. I don't think 41st Infantry Division, A.E.F., either. The colors are wrong, but I also don't believe any A.E.F. units used Brodie helmets. The A.E.F. was issued British Mk I helmets, including those that were repaired/repainted, but I've never heard of a single Brodie helmet being used by the A.E.F. It would seem a stretch to believe the one out there also happened to have a division insignia painted on the side.

Definitely not an "Apples to Apples" comparison. Not even the same color scheme, and an entirely different design on this helmet with the shape of the "sun rays", compared to the one Peter posted that started this thread. This one attributed to the Mike Haley Collection is actually believable to representing the 41st Division. The Mike Haley Collection helmet has the correct color scheme for the Sun and the Sun Rays.

The one Peter posted is absolutely not believable to me as being 41st Division.

I agree 100% with you Peter.

I do also know that Ken Hegwood was very proud that several helmets he painted up in modern times are featured in the "Painted Steel" 2-volume set. I'm not saying the 41st Division example from the Mike Haley Collection is one of those. I know Mike, and he wouldn't lie about the provenance of this helmet of his featured in the book.

There are going to be fakes in 100 years that are attributed as real. Well, I probably won't be around to see it.
