Simplicissimus illustrations are much more accurate. 😉
 
France went through three wars against Germany in less than eighty years. Multiple representations of the German officer are interesting to follow. I would recommend reading, if not already done, the wonderful short novel written by Guy de Maupassant: "Boule de Suif", a huge success when published in 1880, and now a classic of French literature. A carriage transports a group of French people fleeing the Prussian invaders. They are middle- to higher class, wealthy "bourgeois", and among them is also a young, plump prostitute nicknamed Boule de Suif. They express the deepest disdain for this "creature" and refuse to talk to her and share their meals with her. The carriage is shortly intercepted by the Prussians, and all travellers detained. The officer in command then decides they will all remain in jail, unless Boule de Suif spends the night with him. She refuses. Immediately, all other occupants of the carriage come and address her with the sweetest words and compliments, begging her to accept the condition...
I won't spoil the interest by disclosing the end... a great story, beautifully written to illustrate human (French...) vileness.

Je ne dévoilerai pas la fin pour ne pas gâcher le plaisir… une histoire formidable, magnifiquement écrite pour illustrer la vilenie humaine (française…).

Mais peut-être que Monsieur Canrobert aurait la gentillesse / la courtoisie de préciser le but de sa remarque, et si cette dernière visait vraiment notre ami Bruno, qui est l´un de nos plus vénérables et respectables membres francais sur cet espace, de s´excuser. Ce serait bon ton...
