Gentlemen,
Last week, I was able to give this small but very interesting grouping a new :home: in my glas closet \:D/
This came straight from an old family estate in Hamburg. Cap and Militärpaß are both bearing the same name.
I´am still studying and trying to decipher all the differents places and units in which this hanseatic citizen served between March 1915 and December 1918, both eastern and western front. But I think I have fixed now the whole military background of this guy, not an easy job because of the old german scripture ](*,)
I really never tought before, that a simple hanseatic enlisted men had the privilege (or right) to wear the hanseatic cokade while serving in any other prussian unit or arm.
Any appreciation or period regulations about that point would be very welcome! (Glenn? Joe? I am sure, one of you is owning a scan of this regulation  :D )

Before I start to share with you, does somebody maybe already have an idea or is able to guess in which "main" unit and arm this guy could have serve? #-o :D
Philippe

PS: he served in only one arm, but in two different "main" units (first at the eastern front, later at the western front) and in many different "sub-units" of those two "main-units"...

Militärkonvention zwischen dem Norddeutschen Bunde und Hamburg vom 23. Juli 1867

If memory serves me I think these were online – somewhere. :-k

Well, Guys, here is the whole story:

Militärpaß and Feldmütze of Kanonier / Gefreiter Hans Georg Walter Melhop, 1. Garde Fußartillerie Regiment:

A view of the inside of the well worn cap with owner name and maker stamp (Carl Kellner, Hamburg):

17.03.1915: enlisted in the 1. Ersatz Bataillon of the 1. Garde Fußartillerie Regiment:

17.03.15 until 27.06.15: Mörser Stellung, Kriegsbesatzung of the Festung Königsberg:

27.04.15 until 22.08.15: 2. Batterie (later 1. Batterie) of the Fußartillerie Battaillon 24.
22.08.15: refered to the Pultusk Lazarett because of lung disease:

22.08.15 until 26.11.15: Lazarett Pultusk (near the Narew).
27.11.15 until 28.02.16: again Ersatz Bataillon of the 1. Garde Fußartillerie Regiment but in the "Genesenden Batterie" (convalescence battery unit!!! Never heard of that before  )
29.02.16 until 15.03.16: transfered to the 4. Batterie of the Ersatz Bataillon of the 1. G. Fußartillerie Regiment:

21.03.16 until 15.06.16: now western front (Vogesen moutains, Alsace), Fußartillerie Batterie 264, a sub unit of the 10. Niedersächsichen Fußartillerie Regiment:

15.06.16 until 15.11.18: transfered to the Schallmeßtrupp 62 , Ersatz Bataillon of the 10. Fußartillerie Regiment. Combats between Maas and Mosel rivers, near Verdun, between Aisne and Marne rivers, near Soissons, Reims and Vesle (Marne river).
18.07.18: Kanonier Melhop promote to a Gefreiter:

15.11.18 until 21.12.18: because of demobilisation, transfered to the I. Hannoversches Bataillon of the 10. Fußartillerie Regiment.
21.12.18: demobilisation to Hamburg with a new suit, 15 Reichsmark for the home trip but without any pension expectation... :

Well, that was the personal war of the hanseatic Hans Melhop...
I am really wondering if he was allowed to wear the hanseatic cockade on his Garde Kugelhelm too, during his duty in Königsberg... And during spring 1916 as he moved to the 10. Fußartillerie Regiment on the western front, did he receive then a new prussian Artillerie Haube before the steel helmets made their apparition? #-o #-o #-o

From where do you know that the "Fußartillerie-Batterie 264" is a subunit of the "Niedersächsisches Fußartillerie-Regiment Nr. 10"? Would you, please, be so kind to tell me the source of that information. Any hint will be much appreciated. Thanks a lot ...

To answer this question by myself I found that there are at least six different books about the "Niedersächsisches Fußartillerie-Regiment Nr. 10" from the 1920s and 30s dealing with its various battalions (four of which are online). Is it one of these books from which you concluded that the "Fußartillerie-Batterie 264" is part of the "Regiment Nr. 10"? Thanks for answering ...
