    Re-forming / Re-shaping Warped Leather Helmets

Once again Tony has covered some of this on his web site. I would highly recommend the chapter on "Conservation and Display of Antique Leather Headgear". As collectors we are caretakers of these artifacts so we need to do our upmost to preserve them for the next generation. Bill

    Re-forming / Re-shaping Warped Leather Helmets

The only information I have seen in print is in Dr. Eric J Johansson's book "Pickelhauben". He has quite a discussion (pg 157-165) on this but his method is essentually the same as Laurie. Bill

    Prussian Dragoon?????

Greetings Everyone, I have just returned from a Thanksgiving vacation to find this on E-bay. It looked good to me so I fired off my standard request for additional pictures of the back of the helmet plate. The holes have been enlarged on the helmet shell and there is a very large hole in the...

    Seeing Stars.

Count me in on the time share. Is it just me or have these helmets really esclated in price as of late. A few years ago this helmet would go for less than $8,000. Now we are in the $15,000 range...... great return on your investment. Joe. You have said this before about the "Depaheg Patent"...

    Seeing Stars.

72246 in the Weitze catalog is one drop dead super helmet. I have looked at this more than once and can see no problems...... other than the price tag. I would LOVE to own this helmet. If I can just win the powerball. Bill

    Matching the screw threads

Mike, The Whitworth standards were actually three different thread types and didn't become "standard" until 1841. The one lesson that this Forum has shown over and over is that on the surface Germany was industrialised and organized and regulated but in reality variation was the norm. Bill

    Matching the screw threads

Joe, Interesting area for a discussion. It seems that there is some consistency when it comes to the bolts that are used to fix the star studs or the helmet plates. All have a very course thread with a 1mm pitch. This is much more course than the standard metric nuts/bolts being used today...

    Helmet from France

Ok stupid question.... I cannot remember seeing a notation for "reserve not met" on any E-bay auctions outside the U.S. Is this not allowed outside the U.S. or have I just missed something? Bill

If that is a Saxon Duchies (Thuringia) helmet plate on the far right it should have a Fuerst motto and no FR on the chest. Bill

    Leib-Grenadier Helmets

Hi Dave, These are super helmets. Congratulations on your collection. How long have you been collecting? Gus: I have heard that some units selected only individuals that passed a certian height requirement but this was not used very often. I feel that it had more to do with good...

    Helmet from France

Joe, Chas, I did e-mail asking for additional pictures. No reply yet. I don't like the looks of his other "origional" helmets. This also goes back to a nagging question.... If it is so good why are you selling it here rather than your own back yard??? Bill

Back to the subject of removing the bolt from the eagle you could also try a screw extractor. These are purchased at the hardware store and are cheap. I have seen them as small as 5/64" Drill a tap hole in the bolt, incert the extractor which turns conterclockwise and remove the bolt. Just...
