Thanks Chaps. I've now done some serious scraping and find that they are in fact brass. The level of brass alloy must have changed as they are certainly not "as brass" as my others, in fact these are almost as grey as steel, but I can just detect a hint if gold lustre. Thanks for your help. Ian

Side posts. I have a couple of chin strap side posts which are grey metal but not magnetic. I'm sure they are genuine. Can anyone confirm whether they were ever made from alloy, or were they all steel as the "good books" say? Thanks, ian

Yes that's the same B.J.A.XVlll I will try to get some better pictures. 2 from the rear peak are attached. the ink stamp is dated at 1917. Inside there is a blurred ink stamps: B.A.XV 1915 (or 1913).
