    Hessen m15 spike....

What he pulled isn't legal, violating eBay policy by failing to complete the transaction. Keep fighting!

It's time to start the renovation.

Looks like a tough project, but I know you have handled worse cases. I look forward to the result!

WW2 German NCO wearing a Bavarian Pickelhaube

I've had this photo for some years and just love it. How many times can you say you've seen a WW2 German soldier wearing a Pickelhaube? Willing to bet he was a veteran of the Great War.

    New baden haube

Looks to be quite a large size. Am I mistaken? With proper restoration of the shellac, it will really be a lovely example!

Helmets and gear collected from the battlefield

Sadly, I am not sure where this was taken, but it is an interesting photo. Quite the array of helmets and gear collected, some having battle damage or lost parts.

    M1915 in Brass

I am taking the helmet down to do a little TLC and then put it back together (once I score an original liner). The patina of the spike perfectly matches the patina of the spine, which is non-magnetic. The eagle front plate has been on there a very long time.

    M1915 in Brass

Last night, I did some testing with a magnet. The spike and base are magnetic, and both loops on the back of the front plate are non-magnetic. The spike and base, while magnetic, are fire gilded, and would polish just the same as a brass spike. See how polished it is under where the split pins were.

    Ersatz Felt Tschapkas

I hope that you all will enjoy this nice photo, showing Uhlans of Königs-Ulanen-Regiment Nr.13. Half the Tschapkas look to be the normal leather-bodied examples, while half are felt. It makes for a good photo study! Two of the chin straps look to be Ersatz cloth examples as well.

    M1915 in Brass

I will be testing with a magnet tonight, but I am pretty sure it is just aging to the brass. Here are the examples in the French reference book I own.

    Cook's Feldmütze

Here is something you don't see all too often, the cook's Feldmütze in wear.

    M1915 in Brass

I just wanted to include a few more photos of the spike. If you were to give the helmet a quick glance with the spike on, you would swear it was a normal M1895.

    Mecklenburgisches Grenadier-Regiment Nr.89

Here is another fine GR89 Officer photo I recently got in. This one shows Major Günther von Grolman in 1913. He was killed in action a year later in Pontoise, France as commander of III. Bataillon, RIR 90.

    Mecklenburgisches Grenadier-Regiment Nr.89

Time for a bump! This is probably the finest photo I have on the subject of GR89, showing Rudolf Graf von Bünau. He was Regimental Commander from 1901 to 1905.

    Lacquered Felt M1895

Thank you so much, John! I definitely see the value in this survivor and think it will be able to tell a great story all its own with just a little bit of TLC.

    M1915 in Brass

Thank you for your comment, Brian! I will clean the dust and fuzz off the back of the front plate tonight and check whether that loop is steel or brass. I think it might just be brass, but I won't know for sure until I test it. I don't want to change too much with the helmet, just replace the...
