Jeff, I do have a Tschapka that at some point was turned into a piggy bank. A clean slit was cut at the top of the mortarboard. Later, someone was probably shocked by such a lack of respect and managed to fill the hole and hide the trace of that monetary episode in the life of the hat... job...
It is a beautiful helmet. As everybody else said, do not shine it if you can resist!
But since every rule has an exception, here is the only instance when I had to polish a cavalry helmet:
For me, absolutely NO conserving treatment. So many liners have been ruined in spite of good intents. If leather is not decaying, light cleaning with a damp sponge at first and occasional dusting with a soft cloth, and that is it. Why would you want to "conserve" anyway? I have never seen a...

On this one below I did even better than you though :). 150 euro (original chinstrap included) at a small auction in central France. It was dirty but cleaned up well and is actually in really good condition. Stamped JR78.
Thank you, Philippe. All are marked.... except for the artillery helmet. Undoubtedly genuine (came with original chinscales and cockade), but undoubtedly Eigentum. Thinner cardboard-like visors, thin, light tan liner... and no marking whatsoever.
