    Thanks very much guys! The idea of training foreign officers does seem most likely doesn't it? Here's a couple more thoughts I had which may or may not be correct... The two cockades on the caps would seem to date the photo post 1897 though which would rule out the Chinese visitors of 1889-90...

    Great thanks! In addition to yesterday, the blue is described as Dunkel Blau and the Sudwester hatband would also have been dark blue... I really need to write a page on colonial officials soon! Cheers Chris

    Thank you very much for those details. So the total of 123 includes those that arrived after the Niedermayer expedition... does it confirm that first four on your list (Hibján Géza, Erdélyi Ferenc, Fargó Árpád and Kósz István) crossed the Afghan border with Niedermayer and Co? Cheers Chris
