    Chinscales - cleaning and polishing

So here's what I ended up doing. I rummaged around and found an old dremel-like tool, but discovered it was broken so decided I wasn't going to go that route. I tried using a vinegar solution but the tarnish wouldn't budge. I decided to test chemical treatment with Tarn-x and that worked well so...

    Chinscales - cleaning and polishing

Hi Brian and aicuzv, Thanks for the tips. Sounds like there is no really good solution. If the chinscales were gilt I wouldn't try to clean them. I would guess that silver plated chinscales might stand some mild cleaning and polishing better than gilt ones although rubbing off the silver plating...

    Chinscales - cleaning and polishing

What's the best way to clean tarnished chinscales? I've never been sure of the best method, but I bet somebody here has figured that out. My current project is a set of silver plated chinscales. The sections where the scales meet is difficult to reach and I don't what to bend the sets too much...

    Prussian General's Pickelhaube w/Plume

This is one of the last great items from my father’s collection. Even though he’s not with us anymore, I decided that my father will participate in my daughter’s wedding by posthumously donating proceeds from the sale of this helmet to the cause! When this general’s pickelhaube fell into my...

The Hessen Family of Helmets and Their Characteristics

I thought it was good, but had never seen this type (Hessian infantry M15 w/round spike base). Thanks!

The Hessen Family of Helmets and Their Characteristics

I can't figure out how to post photos of the piece, but maybe that's not necessary to get my question answered. -Mark

The Hessen Family of Helmets and Their Characteristics

Is this configuration possibly correct - Hessian M15 infantry helmet with a round base? It is marked to the correct army group: BAR18 and wappen hole spacing seems correct for a Hessian helmet plate. The wappen is missing an attachment loop on the back and I know this can be evidence of...

Baden EM Kokarde - trade for pickelhaube dodads

I'm looking for a Baden EM Kokarde which I would happily buy for a reasonable price, or which I would be willing to trade for other pickelhaube doodads from my parts drawer (Prussian or Reich EM Kokarden, M15 brads, chinstraps, chinstrap hardware, M15 spike, etc) Mark D.

    New Austrian Helmet

Nice piece. Part of the charm of the thing is that it appears to be not messed with. You won't be improving the value by adding a reproduction liner and/or chinstrap. There is also a high likelihood that the spit pins could break as has already been pointed out. I'd leave it as is. Mark D.

    M17 -18 Helmet liner drawstring

Looking for an original helmet liner drawstring of the type found on M17/18 German steel helmets. These were white with a sort of herringbone pattern woven around a core. They are very similar to German WWII helmet drawstrings but are slightly thinner and sometimes a bit flat rather than...

Bavarian officer's kokarde - have parts to trade

I'm looking for an Bavarian officer's pickelhaube kokarde. I'm happy to pay a reasonable price, but also have a few pickelhaube parts to trade (Prussian and Reich EM kokarden, chinstraps, split pins, and a few other doodads) Mark D.

    Cameron Laughlin

The collector community has lost a great craftsman/restorer - maybe the best. He worked on half a dozen projects for my father and me. The results were amazing. Some of you may recall the GdC restoration he did for me. He brought an IR 116 back from the dead with great skill. He was generous to...

    MAX Show

Sorry to miss you. I'll report back. It will be my first time going. The location works for me because I can drive there in a day. -Mark D.

    MAX Show

Yesterday I received confirmation from the Ohio Valley Military Society that I've got two tables at the MAX show. Is anybody else from pickelhaubes.com going? Mark D.

    Finally complete

James, Congratulations! Beautiful piece. It's nice the way the patina of the wappen matches the rest of the trim. I can really empathize with this particular project. I bought a wrecked IR 115 pickelhaube and then launched a parts search. The most difficult thing was the rear visor. I got...
