Nice tschapka with potential on Ebay France...

A good purchase in my opinion, Naprawiacz. Well worth restoration, and you will end up with a great helmet for the cost of a little sweat equity! I think you will make it look great! I look forward to your restoration posts. Bryan.

    Identification of two spikes

Thank you James. Your Prussian looks very close to mine, except that it looks like it has an extra groove/false step on the base.. Do you have a photo of a Saxon G.O. by any chance? I Googled it and came up with a few photos that look pretty spot-on. Perhaps one of the members has a photo...

    Identification of two spikes

So, it is a Prussian General officer spike? I was not sure, and assumed it might be Saxon, but I will look at some Prussian examples as well. Thanks for the tip James and Brian. James, do you have an example of a Prussian General officer spike you could show?

    Identification of two spikes

Here also is a picture of a Bavarian Enlisted Artillery spike on a helmet next to the spike I am trying to identify. It does not have a lower step like the Enlisted spike.

    Identification of two spikes

In this second picture, I have put the unknown spike onto the base of the same Bavarian officer's helmet. This spike only has one "step" that is slightly curved over and appears to be designed to sit on top of the base rather than wrap over it. When I saw it, I was reminded of the way that...

    Identification of two spikes

Here is a photo to show what I mean. This picture has a Bavarian officer helmet with it's spike. The lower second "step" at the bottom of the spike "wraps" over the top of the base.

    Identification of two spikes

In the photo below, the spike that I am asking about whether or not it is a Saxon senior officer spike is on the right. A Bavarian officer spike sits in the middle. An enlisted Bavarian Chevalier spike sits on the left. I compared this silver Chevalier spike with one of my brass Bavarian...

    Identification of two spikes

So, the brass/gold colored spike is not Saxon?

    Identification of two spikes

Hello, I was digging through my parts box and came across a couple of spare spikes I picked up years ago. I figured I would ask the forum to help me properly identify them. I think the one in brass might be a Saxon officer spike? Perhaps for a General Officer? Not sure. The silver one missing...

    Liner for tin ersatz tschapka

Hey Wojtek, Is the loop coming out of the top of your helmet made out of some type of black painted steel wire? I saw a spot of solder in the inner, interior upper portion of the mortar board inside my helmet while I was repairing it. It has me wondering if mine had a wire loop as well that...

    Liner for tin ersatz tschapka

Well, it actually was kind of disintegrating in my hands somewhat. At least around the edges. But it mostly held together, and with its condition, I figured it was good enough. Hopefully it will hold together for another 100 years. Bryan.

    Liner for tin ersatz tschapka

After marking and cutting slits in the new donor leather at the five attaching points, I went ahead and installed the liner onto the 5 brass tabs. Due to shrinkage and missing leather, the fit is not perfect. However, at the end of the day, it is the original round-fingered liner peculiar to...

    Liner for tin ersatz tschapka

The leather glue works fairly effectively. I am using a very thin strip of new donor leather, and am trying to line up the edges of the the old stitching as i glue it on. The majority of the old leather edge with the stitching is missing, unfortunately, so I tried to line it up where it seemed...

    Liner for tin ersatz tschapka

I posted over a month ago about working with a pal of mine to re-shape and repair the metal of a bent and dented tin tschapka. Today, I'm posting about the liner. As seen in the photos, the liner is in bad shape. Red rot has creeped into the rolled edge, and bits of the liner are missing...

Help to restore a JzP helmet extra parts available for trade

Hey Scott, Yeah..., that thing is "helmet salad" for sure! Not poking fun at it, or you. It isn't entirely uncommon for a helmet to have incorrect parts. It happened a lot back in the distant past when the sum of these parts had low value, and even lower collector interest or knowledge. Stuff...
