    Pickelhaubes souvenir

A very thoughtful and kind thing to do. I will hope to pick one up myself in person. Thank you!

    Bavarian EM felt ersatz

Thank you, guys. I really do appreciate your input! You know, collecting pickelhauben can be fun and very interesting. But these days, for me, it also kind of seems to be a fairly singular, and somewhat "distant from the pack" part of militaria collecting. Kind of like being the "Maytag Repair...

    Bavarian EM felt ersatz

Thanks guys. I was thinking the chinstrap might be a repro as well, but the guy who owned this helmet before passed away in the mid 1980s. I recall looking at this helmet as a kid in the mid 1970s at his house and noticing the thick verdigris back then, so it must be a fairly old repro from...

Jäger zu Pferde and Kurassier helmet restorations.

I completely feel your pain on this, Pontrest. I too, have bought a JzP shell quite some time back, thinking that i would locate parts and rebuild it. Unfortunately, it has been sitting for several years gathering dust as my attempts to locate parts have been fruitless. I did finally pick up...

    Two Helmets From Singapore

This is pretty cool! Looking forward to seeing the end results! Bryan.

    JR 73 Officer's Helmet

Thanks. Just a thought, but I am looking forward to seeing your efforts. I have a few helmets, chinscales and a couple of sets of cuirass shoulder straps to rebuild over the next few months. I may try your method for shell finishing. I will post my progress when I get started. Bryan.

    Württemberg spikehelmet metal

Hello Giorgio, Please let me preface this with an acknowledgement that I am in no way an expert, nor do I have a collection the size of several of the more austere members of this site. Many others here may have very different insights on this subject than I do. I can only give you speculation...

    Prussian M1895 artillery enlisted men.

Hey Coert, I personally don't think your photos look bad at all. They look pretty good from my perspective. And that is another fantastic looking helmet. I would love to have one like it in my collection!

    Bavarian M1895 enlisted men.

Nice, all original EVERYTHING on that helmet! A great looking piece!

    Württemberg spikehelmet metal

Thanks pppara! Those are indeed the snaps I normally see on these! And those two examples are nice. I believe the ones I have seen them missing on were the green oversprayed versions. Do you think they got rid of the snaps the way they got rid of other parts on the later versions? Bryan.

    JR 73 Officer's Helmet

This is an interesting thread. I wonder, Brian..., One of the members hereasked about spraying on finishes. Since spray painting and spray finishing came into being in the 1880s, could this system have been the type used by manufacturers after that date? It seems like it would be a fairly...

    JR 73 trooper Helmet

I have seen white paint a couple of times as well over the years, but mostly on pre-1900 helmets. Perhaps the quartermaster officer in that Regiment's supply room preferred using the white marking paint with his units stamps. Seems like it would make it easier to sort dry, sweat-soaked...

    Prussian -Pioniere Pickelhaube 16PB

I like your helmet a lot! Fantastic, close up and well done photos. The simple M1895 is what started me on this helmet addiction as a seven year old kid. It's form, simplicity and beauty are what brought most of us into the fold, I would wager. And Pioneer helmets of any flavor are...

    Württemberg spikehelmet metal

Thank you pppara. That does answer my questions! I appreciate you getting back to me. I was curious about the snap button in the liners as well concerning these helmets. I was certain I had seen one or two over the years that did not have them. Those without them, per your post, must have...

    Württemberg spikehelmet metal

Thank you, pppara. You seem to have collected a lot of info on this type of helmet. That picture of the cockade was great! Thank you for posting that. I am not sure I am following the answers you just gave to Brian concerning Bing and Weissenburger helmets. My ignorance on this particular...

    Württemberg spikehelmet metal

I'll be darned! I've seen these cockades on the loose for decades, and I never once noticed one with a felt cushion! Learning something new every day... I wonder if the green over-painted, later versions of this helmet did away with the felt cushion disc's? I know the later version went with...

    Bavarian EM felt ersatz

I picked this Bavarian EM's felt ersatz recently, and figured I would post it. Overall, the helmet seems to be in very good condition. I have noticed over the years that the color of the felt on the Bavarian felt ersatz helmets usually seems to have more of a brownish shade, whereas the...

The only time that I haven't seen these types of cockades on this type of helmet is when they have been replaced. Good luck finding a set. They are tough...
