I've heard of Latvian fakes of WWII visor caps, etc., but does this buckle seem to be good?

The buckle looks like a good one. For comparison, here is a a pre 1915 cast brass version with the hook that is sewn into the belt.

Guys buy these, thinking it will fit on any WW1 German belt, and they get a shock, as it won't. The hook is reversed on a mounted troops belt.

It's an interesting setup.

Seems like I've seen a period photo of a buckle with a little of the loop protruding past the leather, but I can't recall what reference book had it .

Is that likely due to wartime tolerance variation or stretched-out leather?
