1920: America's Great War

I want to recommend Robert Conroy's new book 1920: America's Great War, which came out last month. This is not a sequel to his similar themed 1901, which was an alternative history novel in which the Germans invaded the United States in 1901. I have to admit I hadn't read the first one and found the premise a little dubious.

With that in mind I decided to give 1920 a chance and it was very enjoyable cover to cover. I happen to enjoy the "what if" novels quite a bit, but I've tired of Harry Turtledove as he has many cliches, many similar characters, plots, etc.

Without giving much away the premise of 1920 is that the German Army won the Battle of the Marne in 1914, defeated the French and British and then turned its attention to Russia. Germany was the undisputed major power and Woodrow Wilson basically wants peace at all costs and strips the American military. The Germans manage to do "peace keeping" in Mexico, build up an army and led by the Crown Prince invade the United States.

It isn't the start of the series so there won't be a 1921, and instead it has a reasonable beginning, middle and satisfying end. I rather enjoyed it.

Thanks for the recommendation. I've read one of Conroy's other books, "Himmler's War", and it was a very good read. Much better alternative history than Harry Turtledove's cliched and jingoistic books.

I'll definitely check this out.

Cheers, Bungo
