2-Helmets from the Grandson of a WW1 U.S. Veteran: Hessian Artillery & Camo M16

I picked up 2-helmets recently from the grandson of a WW1 U.S. Veteran who was stationed at Coblenz after the Armistice.

I'll have to see if I can find out what unit the soldier was in. Hopefully I'll be able to discover which Infantry Regiment he served in.

Sadly, both helmets were not given the best of care over the years. The real crime is that the rare Hessian 25th or 61st Artillery Regiment Helmet had been on display in a room of the grandson's home which had a leaky roof many years ago, and he didn't catch this happening until after the fact. The leather sweatband absorbed water, and dried rock hard, and sadly 2/3 of the sweatband turned dark and dried rock hard, rotted and fell out. The silk liner is still present and in good shape. Fortunately the helmet shell and front visor still seem to be in decent condition. He also let the helmet get very dusty, as you can see from the photos. The back visor stitching broke loose on one side, and I'm guessing that the back visor also became wet from the leaky roof. How tragic!

Anyway, they are what they are, both bring-back helmets from a US WW1 Veteran that were still out there with a family.

Best Wishes,

Alan

Here's photos of the camo helmet. The pads fell off the M16 leather band inside the helmet. Helmet is shell is a common ET66.

Hello Alan,
A weakness for the Hessian artilleryman of the FAR25 or 61. I particularly like the Hessian 👌 (y) We know that the Hessians remained far from Prussian standards. The Hessian officers kept the rear vertical reinforcement for a long time with visible rivets as with the "Dragons". No star among the Hessian officers except after April 6, 1915 for the FAR 61. Regarding the Perlring, never among the officers or the troop, except among the Artillery officers as here.
As Wojtek says, it is still possible to perform certain restorations.
The Stahl16 is also friendly.👏
Clovis.

You do really excellent work in repairing seemingly hopeless cases. Thank you for posting.

I am putting a link here to a post that I made in 2016 regarding a unique 61st Hessen Feld Arty officer uberzug that I have owned for approximately 3 decades. I am still looking for further information on the piece and as we see a Hessen Arty officer helmet here in Alan's post perhaps this will produce more discussion. The link:

Thanks to everyone for their nice comments, I appreciate it!

That's a super cool cover Brian! I have never seen those white "fore and aft" strips of cloth on a cover. It would make sense that they could be for a maneuver referee. Hopefully as you say, we will find out more on it!

I missed seeing this back in 2016 when you posted it.

The cover would look super cool with my Hessian artillery officer helmet of course. Just teasing you of course! It is a rare cover indeed! Thanks for posting it for us to see!

Best Wishes,

Alan
