2. Nassauisches Inf.-Regt. Nr. 88

Lost Skeleton

It has been quite some time since I purchased a helmet at a show, but I saw this at the MAX and couldn't resist. Though it bears no regimental stamp, nothing has been altered on this M95 – no spurious extra holes, and the brass grommets are intact. The sole detractions are a slightly crumpled spike tip and a short hairline crack in the spike base. Otherwise, it wears its age well. The visor trim is stamped H. CLEMEN for the manufacturer.

Thanks for looking. :)

I have added photos of the outline shadow of the Adlerwappen as well as the reverse of the Wappen itself, as someone was bound to inquire.

Der Kammerbulle makes some astonishingly good-looking reproductions of the IR 88 Wappen. It certainly pays to exercise caution with hen's teeth:

You can't pass up on that Wappen.
That was my thinking, Tony. I'm really partial to the Napoleonic Wars commemorative banderole, and was thrilled to add this to the FR 73, IR74, IR 92, JB 10, and FAR 10 helmets in my collection.

Great hearing from you, BTW.

Chas- nice to see you posting, this is a great helmet, and you can be proud of it.

Hope the show was good for you, besides this great score.

I believe that observation is only partly correct, Ed. There have been two Wappen on this M95 during the course of its service life, and both have cut into the surface leaving a "ghost." We all have a comfort level when it comes to purchasing a historic object that has passed through so many hands, Kammer, family, and collector, over the span of 115± years. Perhaps I rationalize, but issued military equipment was reissued and repaired. I own several examples of Feldbrauchbar helmets bearing Garnitur stamps. Honestly, I have no problem with it. Perhaps, it was originally issued to IR 87. Who knows?

For me the criteria are rarity, obvious signs of fakery, and price.

Is the helmet original? Yes. Does it have the correct spike (e.g., static or Trichter compatible) for the regiment in question? Yes. Is the Wappen authentic? Yes. Is the furniture (chin strap and kokarden) original and does it fit properly? Yes. Has the Wappen been modified (re-soldered loops or threaded posts) to fit the helmet? No. Has the helmet been modified (extra or enlarged holes) to fit the Wappen? No.

I'm happy with my purchase.
