Greetings Guys
This was one of our souvenirs from the SOS, actually purchased it about a week prior, but took delivery of it there.
The Franco-Prussian era holds great interest for me, and one of the most difficult items to find (at least for me, that is) are articles of uniforming, especially an issue piece showing a date of 1870 or before. A year or so ago I had the good fortune of purchasing an 1871 dated 10th Foot Artillery tunic, close, but no cigar, as the 10th was formed in May of 1871.
I post this tunic here for your enjoyment and comments. The tail is solid across, not altered or split to conform with the later regulations, shoulder straps are quite wide, the piping is thick, and the lining is of a simple white muslin, with a mix of machine and hand stitching throughout. Lots of age is in evidence, with fading to the red wool of the cuffs and the obligatory moth hole here and there.
While this tunic may date from a time later than February of 1871, I feel that it is possibly from the era because of construction techniques, however, without the all important issue marks, it will always be a matter of conjecture.
It is a nice old tunic in any case, and worn by a soldier from an elite regiment. Looking forward to your comments.
