55JR IIIB 1896 Schaumburg 1914 Detmodt

This post was inspired by the presentation of a Shako of the 7JB, from Westphalia, holder of the tradition of the Schaumburg hunters.

This helmet traces the military history of the principality of Schaumburg-Lippe in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

A little history:

Until 1867, the small principality of Schaumburg-Lippe (population 50,000) only retained a single chasseur detachment with just 3 battalions; by agreement, on 30 June 67, the chasseur detachment was disbanded. The natives and recruits from this small state were then absorbed into either JR55 IIIB (6th Westphalia) or the Westphalian JB7. From 1867 to 1897 (22 March 1897), the blue-red-white Schaumburg roundel was worn on the left of the spiked helmet of the III/55JR, the Schaumburg natives. From 22 March 1897, the blue-red-white roundel disappeared from the III/55JR. The Schaumburg colours remained only on the Feldzeichen of the Westphalian JB7.

Now we come to my helmet:

An M95/97 brass Landkokarde from Lippe-Detmodt, with the red centre on the left and the Reichskokarde on the right.

Well marked 55JR IIIB. and dated 1896 and 1914 ! Found with its beautiful Lippe-Detmodt roundel in its mobilisation configuration.

Except that one day, on closer inspection, I noticed that the red and gold brass roundel was hiding another one underneath: Bingo, the one from Schaumburg-Lippe!

A chauvinist from that little state, no doubt. This configuration, with its tricolour roundel, corresponds to 1896, when the III/55R brought together the natives of Schaumburg.

And it's these beautiful marks that corroborate the history of the Schaumburg-Lippe spiked helmet.

What a novel when you know how to make a spiked helmet talk. 😊

Thanks for the post
Steve

A wonderful and above all rare authentic helmet from a very small federal contingent.
Congratulations…..

Both scarce and absolutely amazing!
Something for the real specific and very knowledgeable collectors ☝️ (y)

Thank you, gentlemen,
I'd like to take this opportunity to add the vintage progression of the Schaumburg-Lippe roundels

A firefighter's model:
Fwr Schaumburg Lippe.jpg

The M1867 model for the first JR55 IIIBs. This model remained in use until the M1891, when the central hole was increased to 19mm for the side post. Schaumburg-Lippe M67 VA-HM.jpg

Model M1891 for the side post, which lasted until 1897, when it disappeared to make way for the roundel in the Lippe-Detmodt colours.

And we finish with Detmodt's final M1891, which replaced the previous one in 1897 at the IIIB/55JR.

Thank you Philippe, I know who paid you that compliment, and I'm all the more honoured. I can make a spiked helmet talk, but I'll never be a ‘biographer’ of nominatives, a speciality in which you excel, without any equal.

Congratulations on a beautiful helmet Clovis!

Before the introduction of the Reichskokarde, all other ranks serving with Prussian regiments were allowed to wear their own Landeskokarde (if different from Prussia) on the left in addition to the Prussian Kokarde on the right. For III. battalion IR 55 this would not exclusively have been troops from Schaumburg-Lippe, but also from other "Land", so not every soldier would wear the Schaumburg-Lippe Kokarde on the left, and some would not wear any Kokarde on the left at all. After 1897, all other ranks in III. battalion IR 55 wore the Lippe-Detmold Kokarde on the left, regardless of where they originated from.

Both Schaumburg-Lippe and Lippe-Detmold Kokarden are quire rare, thank you for showing these fine examples :)

Regards,
Lars

Hello Thierry
Is it possible to get specific views of the Schaumburg cocade?

Yes, I'll do that soon, but following a total rupture of the Achilles tendon, I'm currently immobilised for 6 weeks. I just got back from hospital today. I have an archival helmet with a Landkokarde from Schaumburg, copyright ‘Festwagner’. can't remember if it came from me or from Tony's.? Can you confirm this for me?

A wish to you for a full recovery.

Get well soon that's a painful injury I had a similar injury from playing fussball and I remember I had to wear a special boot for some time.

That is a wonderful helmet Thierry, and I cannot think of a better place for it to be.

I started out reading your helmet posting with excitement, and then when I read your horrible injury, I was curling my toes with eyes shut! Ow ow!!

Times have changed I ruptured my Achilles back in the 80's, after surgery in a cast for couple months then 3 months of a boot, then special shoes with heal lifts, after every two weeks they would cut part of the heal off the shoes to gradually stretch out the Achilles. Was a miserable summer...
