Dear fellow collector,

To complete a display of an officer of the Bay.Leib Infantry regiment in early Feldgrau uniform, I am considering purchasing this helmet.

I am not a big fan of the inside liner and I never saw such kind of Kokarde, I would be very grateful to get your view on that one.

Many thanks

National Kokarde is Saxon style.

James started a thread showing various Bavarian kokardes which is found here on this link: https://www.pickelhaubes.com/xf/threads/bavarian-kokarden.15375/#post-142669

The Bavarian kokarde you show here on this thread has some similarities to a couple that James shows. However, your kokarde appears to have a raised blue ring, which makes it a different style of kokarde from those shown by James in his thread.

I found some kokardes on page 158 of the reference book "Die Helme der Koniglich Bayerischen Armee 1806-1918" by Walter Seibold and Gerd M. Schulz. I could not find a photo of a kokarde that is of the same design as the one on the helmet you are showing here.

Let us see what James thinks about the kokarde.

Thanks for posting photos of it here for us to see.

Best Wishes,

Alan

Looks like the light blue paint on the korkade was added at some point. The front plate also looks like it was added as well with the cross touching the base something just doesn't look right.

I don't think that cross would have made it over a hundred years in that precarious position, but it could just be me.

It's a pretty helmet, but I think it was put together. The pieces just don't look like they have been together all that long.

If you look from the back, you can also see the indentation on the base that shows where the back spine should be, but they just don't line up of fit. I know I'm a bit picky.

We've talked before and you know I collect this unit; to be honest I would have already bought the helmet from Malcolm if it wasn't for the things I mentioned. I think inside he also thinks the same because his price reflects it. If not, the Helmet would be 1000+ euros more expensive.

You're in the driver's seat you can buy it or wait for another where you don't have to ask questions. As buyers sometimes our first impressions are the best, I personally don't like to buy items that have to convince myself are correct or explain away things that don't look and feel right because I want them to.

It would look good with your tunic (y), by the way I'm still very interested in buying it ;):)

I like the kokarden, I have seen this type, mainly on Raupenhelm, the the Bavarians were very good at using what they had! I like the helmet and the kokarden and would add it to my collection in a heartbeat!

paint appears to be redone, good eye John, but I can live with it!

Alan- thanks for reminding me about the Kokarden thread, I should update as I now have more to share!

I like the helmet and the cockades too. Especially the Bavarians often had extravagant and colorful liners. The cockades, like Brian said, was used on Bavarian Raupenhelmets before.
The only thing I’d like to mention is the missing red/green cloth on the underside of the visors. I think the Bavarians also used them.

Dear gentlemen,

Many thanks for your comments and the analysis.
Indeed, I was also puzzled by the missing red/green cloth on the underside of the visors.
Good to know also for the Kokarden, I learned again something new.
Well spotted John !

I will maybe wait a bit to find a better one to display with my tunic ! ( this tunic will be for you one day John :) )
I now look for the red Litzen on the collar.

Many thanks
