A Prussian cloth covered cork pickelhaube

Here’s a rather hard to find ersatz helmet. It’s actually a cloth covered M95 type, made of cork. Some sources say the cover is made of cotton, other talk about wool. To me it looks and feels more like some kind of canvas. Maybe someone can enlighten us about this?

Characteristics:

- Cork helmet covered with canvas-like cloth
- Both visors are stitched seperately to the cork Shell
- The visors are also cloth covered cork and have no metal or leather edges
- The chinstrap is directly fixed together with the kokarden to the helmet body.
- Brass fittings
- A very simple linerband instead of the normal liner with tongues and liner cord
- The linerband can be made of brown leather or ersatz leather
- The helmet shell is lined on the inside
- The liner has four seams (one from front to back and one from left to right)
- The outside cover has a seam on the left an one on the right side
- Undetatchable ventilated spike
- No back spine

The majority of this type of helmet I’ve seen are Saxon, but I’ve only seen a few Prussians. It seems that also a Würtemberg variation exists, but I’ve never seen one yet…
On this particular helmet we can also see the marks of a cover that must have been there for ages, too bad it didn’t come with the helmet… On the other hand it’s a good thing the cover has been there, otherwise the helmet itself would be in less condition I suppose…
I hope you enjoy this one as much as I do…

Adler- a super helmet and hard to find!, I have a Prussian one very similar to yours. I saw a Würtemberg sell on ebay a couple years ago, and went for very big money, I was out bid in the end.

This is one of my favorite variations.

Again, Congrats on a very nice helmet.

Great helmet.
Some discriptions say "linen" covered.

These are the TOP reference books ! The best since J-L Larcade!

"Ersatz" does not always mean bad quality. This one is so well made.

Thanks for sharing Karel !

Great helmet would love to have one.

Any identification on the unit in photo? Looks as it may be an artillery unit, but they have pointing things and not round on top.

Relative to the picture

The 3 in the middle the guys on the outside however...

From Tony S. These two guys on either side are Train. Swedish cuffs on the Feldrock and wearing leather-reinforced trousers. Plus mounted troop belts and carrying Train M52 sabres.

Thank you very much for that picture Joe, it's a great addition to this thread!
Thanks for your comments guys!

I do not collect ersatz helmets but I acknowledge that this one is in great condition, as compared to the cloth covered Pickelhauben I have seen in the past!
