A salty felt helmet.

Hello guy's, today I bought a felt haube, a salty one with some splits in the visor.
The brass fittings have lots of patina on them, some would start polishing it, but I think I will
leave it as found.

Greetings, Coert :)

Hi Coert, good acquisition! I agree with you when it comes to not polishing. It is very easy to polish away a century of patina, but if the results are disappointing you can never put it back! Believe me: during my "first collection" in the 1980's I noticed a couple of times that my so-called "improving" just buggered up a poor helmet! After two times I learned my lesson, and left well enough alone. It's far too easy to do too much, but you can never do too little :D ! By the way: congratulations on your new piece!

Congratulations Coert. Wonderful find!
I noticed some discoloration on the Wappen. If this is active verdigris you will want to get rid of it.
Verdigris is essentially brass rust --- oxidation.
Here is a trick I use when I want the original patina but also wish to stop the progression of the oxidation:
1) Remove the Wappen carefully and wash it with mild soap and water, NOT polish.
2) With a Q-tip or brush completely saturate the verdigris area with vinegar and let it set for a couple of minutes.
3) Some will disagree with this, but I always follow this up by putting a couple drops of machine oil over the offending area.
The piece retains the green of the verdigris but the advance of the oxidation is thwarted.
