Is it typical for the ends of the Reserve cross arms to be hidden
behind the center device like that?
 
Looking closely the edge of those cross arms on the top and bottom might be broken off -- even so at the price this went for a wappen and can be had. I think I saw one recently in fact I know I did I just have to remember where -- good question though.
 
Joe, it seems that these top and bottom arms are actually present, albeit almost completely hidden.

The original owner was 'Hans Oppermann of Saxon Regiment 102'. Any help or tips for researching him would be appreciated.

There may be some big manufacture differences here. The picture above is mine and I remember Tony had a cross that was painted black or colored black. Mine has some sort of pebbling on the arms.
 
Might as well join in here. Here is my Sachsen Reserve Infantry Fähnrich. The Landwehr cross should be silver. On this example however, the cross is painted black. I bought this direct from a family, so I am very confident this was painted black a very long time ago, and I have no idea why. So it stays the way it is. Mike, you scored a beautiful helmet at a bargain price. Good for you.

Researching reserve officers has always been difficult. Mike might be the best guy on this site. What I have done previously is seek out the regimental history of JR 102 and try it from that angle.
 
Here is a Tschapka, Pointystuff. Note that both the star AND the central saxon badge are of yellow metal, which was the rule for UR17 and UR18.

I mean, this was the rule for Reserve officer Tshapkas. Active officer Tschapkas in these 2 regiments had the classic yellow star/white arms design.
