I have had this piece im my collection for probably for 30 years. I did post photos during the early years of the forum but our membership has grown with many more experienced collectors who I hope may provide additional information. I bought this at a small local show held in one of the CN Legion Branches in my area. I was told that it came out of an old house that was being cleared. Some photos:

I believe that the 5th Regt. were a Bavarian outfit and I would be interested in knowing where the CEF troops could have came up against them. One of the Prussian 5th Regts. was a Garde Grenadier and the other a Grenadier Regt. from Danzig. To me this would have been indicated on this piece if it was made by a member of one of these formations. So this leads me to believe the plaque came from Bavarian JR 5 formed in 1722, based in Bamberg IIAK. The white skull motif also raises questions about Kompanie Nr 23....were they a storm trooper unit, MW ?? Any extra information from the membership would be greatly appreciated.

The wood appears to be pine to me and the nails/screws are certainly period. Whoever made this certainly had some artistic talent!

Hi, nice piece, but strange with the “23”, as far as I know now, the Landwehr Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 76 was probably the only Infantry regiment in the German army with 5th battalions (maximum ~20 companies). So unfortunately I have no explanation for this.
Best regards, Jens

addendum: I ask myself: is it really from the First World War or could it perhaps be from the Second World War???
... ok I I forgot, there it is written "1917" - then WW2 makes no sense!

I guess the 17 belongs to the 19 and stands for 1917. So I would read the information as follows:
  • Infantry Regiment Nr. 5 (GR5? - It might be helpful to know in which state the house was located whose household was dissolved)
  • Company no. 23
  • Soldier's year of service: 1917
It’s just my thought for brainstorming 🫣

My thanks to all for their suggestions. Sandy, this piece was a Canadian WW1 veteran’s war souvenir. The piece was found here in Ontario Canada.
