Here is a vert neat little fitz helmet with a few interesting features:
- first, double-pressed felt pads on each side of the chinstrap lugs. Both stitched at the time of manufacture;
- secondly, some rather unusual methods of fixing the front plate. The holes are, like most felt ersatz, crudely drilled into the felt but, on this occasion, the manufacturer used two larges chinstrap lug washers to keep them in place and apply the right amount of force to keep the plate solidly attached;
- thirdly, the four split-pins of the spike base are sprayed in feltgrau. They left a print in the inner plate showing that they were installed there from origin. Strange mix of couloir considering that the rest of the metal fittings are of the M15 gray;
- Finally, a very nice an original cloth chinstrap which, I believe, looking at the colour matching of all the metal parts of the chinstrap V rest of the helmet, has been attached to the helmet from the time of manufacture. Also note how the chinstrap has adopted the shape of the helmet on the sides. Like all proper ersatz chinstraps, the two buckles are attached by a rivet, no stitching. Looking at it carefully, I think that the chinstrap has actually never been removed from the helmet as there is no evidence of paint scratch on the chinstrap hooks.
