We definitely have some " German nobility" here in ownership:




This obviously is a beautiful high quality tunic created for a member of the German nobility. I look forward to Glenn or one of our other experts identifying the original owner of this piece of History.
From AHZ: "This is a See Batt'l messe dress jacke--the property of an Oberleutenant made for him in Januar 1910 and so named( from a well known family involved in german gov't even until lately) so much so that when I google the name I can't get him( I have the same problem with Von Usedom in the 95 Inf 1893)"

The later Generalmajor z.V. Max Hans Moritz von Prittwitz und Gaffron (1876-1956). More to follow.

Born 29 March 1876 in Breslau, educated in his parents' home and entered Grenadier-Regiment Nr. 11 as an "Avantageur" (Fahnenjunker) on 1 December 1894. Promoted to Portepee-Fähnrich on 18 April 1896 and commissioned as a Sekonde-Lieutenant on 18 April 1896. From 1903 to 1906 he was the adjutant to the commander of the Neuhammer training area and promoted to Oberleutnant on 21 May 1906. He transferred to the Marine-Infanterie on 9 January 1909, serving with the 1. See-Bataillon. He left the Marine-Infanterie on 1 Sep 1912 and re-joined the army as an Hauptmann in Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 81 with effect 1 October 1912. Highly decorated in WW1, he was promoted to Major on 20 Sep 1918. He remained in the Reichswehr after the war until 1928, retiring as a brevet (charakterisierter) Oberst. He re-entered service in 1933 as a supplementary (E) officer, ultimately being promoted to the rank of Generalmajor on 1 Sep 1941. He retired in 1943.

The ribbons on the mess dress jacket are the Prussian centenary medal, the Anhalt Albert the Bear Knight's cross 2nd class and a Saxon-Ernestine House Order Knight's cross 2nd class.

a problem shared :D Oberst (later Generalleutnant) Victor v. Usedom (1842-1900). Please let me know if you need further information regarding this gentleman.

Here are extracts from two period "Ranglisten" showing the position and seniority of Max v. Prittwitz. The first is from the seniority section of the naval list of 1911 which gives information as to current held rank, orders and decorations, naval station (Ost or Baltic), the dates of entry into both the army and navy respectively, seniority date and unit.

The second is an extract from the army list of the same year. The naval infantry were listed as an appendix and this page shows Oberleutnant v. Prittwitz as the senior officer of that grade within the battalion and as the platoon commander of the telegraph platoon.

Both list his then held decorations of the Anhalt Albert the Bear Knight's cross 2nd class (AB3b) and Saxon-Ernestine House Order Knight's cross 2nd class (HSH3b). As was Prussian practice, the centenary medal is listed in neither publication.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH GLEN -----I am over whelmed with so much information after so many years of attempting and getting no where...

It is so wonderful to see the name in the actual Rangliste and to see that he was in the 1SB in the midst of a career in the

Armee. Such a long life in service to his country. This makes me so glad that this was saved, many years ago. It appears that

the ribbon bar is correct for the the jacket. I will refer to this information frequently !!!!!! Hopefully something I post will help others

Yes, I would also appreciate any info you can supply on VON USEDOM ( all i ever find is about an island) Was he also a general later??
I have a Sword presented to him when he retired as Commanding Offizier dem 6 Thuringen Infanterie Regimet No.95 for service 1890 bis 1893 .There was another sword also -to him -from his Regimental Comrade in Gera -- Constantine von Yastremky - now floating around somewhere..
 
Glen -- I forgot to mention that on the reverse of the Damasus blade is a nine pointed Ducal Crown - in another cartousche above is an 1870 Iron Cross..

His personal seaL FOR INK /WAX-- is on the lock nut of the hilt and the regimental cypher is in relief on the hilt-- a crowned GE -on this sword model 1889... WHEN I'M CAPABLE PHOTOS WILL FOLLOW. BEST REGARDS ALTE hELM ZIMMER Randolpho

I don't know what your German is like but before I scan a couple of pages on General v. Usedom, here is a much briefer résumé of Konstantin v. Jastrzemski's career. Born in Liegnitz on 1 April. 1875. Following his education at his parents' home and the cadet corps, he entered Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 96 as a charakterisierter Fähnrich on 17 March 1894. Promoted to Fähnrich on 18 October 1894 and commissioned as a Sekonde-Lieutenant effective 18 October 1895. Per order of 22 March 1897, effective 1 April 1897 he was transferred to Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 153 followed by a further transfer to Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 136. He was granted the permission to retire on 21 August 1900 and at the time of the publication of the Offizier- Stammliste of Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 96 in 1912 was living in Buenos Aires. I can find no indication that he returned to Germany to participate in WW1.

My German is ok . Dictionary editions here include an 1891, 1913 plus two German military volumes by the US Army and some modern editions.

For the non German readers, I will provide an English résumé:

Victor von Usedom was born in Königsberg, East Prussia on 17 December 1842. Following his education in the cadet corps, he entered Grenadier-Regiment Nr. 1 as a Sekonde-Lieutenant on 6 March 1860. He was employed as the adjutant of the Füsilier battalion from 1 October 1862 to 31 August 1863 after which he was assigned as an orderly officer to the Crown Prince for the duration of the autumn manoeuvres between the Guard and III Army corps from 1 to 28 September 1863. He resumed his appointment as the adjutant of the Füsilier battalion on 29 September until 17 April 1964 and the following day took up his next appointment as the regimental adjutant. In this position he participated in the Austro-Prussian War and was promoted to Premier-Lieutenant on 30 October 1866. On 2 February 1867 to 9 March 1870 he was the adjutant of the 3. Infanterie-Brigade. Whilst in this appointment his parent unit became Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 74 from 16 March 1869. On 10 March 1870 he was transferred to the Mecklenburg Jäger-Bataillon Nr. 14 with an improved seniority as a Premier-Lieutenant of 21 July 1866. From 21 July to 14 August 1870 he was company leader of the replacement company. Promoted to Hauptmann on 15 August 1870, he then saw action with the battalion in the field and was severely wounded at Orleans on 2 December 1870. He was promoted as a supernumerary major in the battalion on 24 June 1880 followed by a transfer to Grenadier-Regiment Nr. 89 on 12 February 1881. On 4 November 1883, he became commander of Jäger-Bataillon Nr. 14 with promotion to Oberstlieutenant coming on 1 September 1887. He was provisionally appointed to the command of Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 95 on 15 February 1890 and was confirmed as such on 24 March 1890 on promotion to Oberst. Three years later on being placed à la suite to his regiment he was provisionally appointed to the command of the 40. Infanterie-Brigade. With promotion to Generalmajor on 18 April 1893, he assumed permanent command. Promoted to Generallieutenant on 27 January 1897, he deputized for the absent commander of the 9. Division, being appointed the permanent commander on 10 March 1897. He retired on 9 June 1898 and died on 9 March 1900 in Hermannsthal (Lauenburg District).

Glen. The German text pages and your generous English resumes. are greatly appreciated. I am self taught in German and your translation was very useful in double checking my understanding.
It will take awhile to internalize the info on von Usedom & von Jastrzemski and to ponder why a much younger man presented a sword to a senior offz. from another reg't. (using the inscription " from a regimental comrade in Gera "
Specifically your info identifies Victor Eduard von Usedom as the recipient of these presentation swords . Any info I could find previously was about another man. THANK YOU SO MUCH AGAIN- Alte Helm Zimmer ---Randolpho
