Many years ago whilst studying in Hamburg for a year I lodged with this old gentleman for a year. Rent free : I just had to run shopping errands and read the local paper to him in my poor German.
He had many tales of life in Edwardian England where he was posted by his firm for a couple of years before 1914 and also about his time on the Eastern Front where he spent all his service , latterly in Romania .
