Any ideas what this is and for

This was wired on the front of a M95 Pickelhaube shell I just picked up, obviously not for that helmet, but what is it for.

I think it may be Polish? Heavy steel, to heavy to be on a helmet I would think? Has to weigh close to a pound.

any help would be appreciated.
