Attic Find *new pictures added*

This was found in the attic of my wife's grandparent’s house. They passed a few years ago and when we were cleaning out the house we came across this helmet and two other German helmets from the WWII era? The other two are more like the standard German helmet I’m use to seeing in old films. There’s a swastika on either side above the ear. I can get pictures of those too if anyone is interested. Can anyone tell me anything about this one in particular? I did just a little checking and it appears to be an 1889 cavalry pickelhaube. Any help you could give would be great.

Thanks,
Dave

Also, I was talking to my father in law and he said his father dug these out of the local dump many years ago… someone actually threw them away.

i looked a little further and it appears to be a Model 1915 Preußen Kürassier Metalhelme

inside it's marked DAMASCHKE 1916

how common is this style??

Dave- you already got the answer to what you have.

Condition on the outside looks tough, but may clean up, however, the inside is in awesome shape, one of the better I have seen.

These are not uncommon, but still nice and has some value.

Missing both side Kokarden and the chinstrap.

Nice find

Would love two see pictures fo the 2 WWII ones for interest.

Any suggestions for cleaning? I don’t want to damage of de-value it if possible. Any idea how much these go for if it cleaned up ok (missing the chin strap and Kokardens)? I think I plan on keeping all three, but it doesn’t hurt to know what you’re working with.

Thanks for your help.

Here are the other two. Any info on these would be great. Again, I plan on keeping them, but I would like to know the approximate value in their current condition.

thanks...

Also, any suggestions on where to get period appropriate and genuine Kokardens and chin strap for the 1915.

Nice helmets !

Left is a German M17

Right is a M40 Marine Coastal Police ( Marine Küstenpolizei ) or Wasserschutzpolizei ( Water Protection police ) if is a gold eagle

All are nice.

The M1916 will bring $350 and up - perhaps as much as $600.

God I wish I could have a day like you had - attic find indeed. Just. Once. In. My. Life !!

Nice! Some great helmets there. You'll enjoy working (carefully) on the Kurassier, hope it isn't pitted to deeply.
Your wife's grandfather had brains. Yeah, we've all heard older folks say, "Used to have one, but threw it out years ago".. Makes one want to scream.

Dave welcome to the forum. As has already been said, you have lucked out on some very nice helmets. Each has their original liner which is a big bonus. Regarding the rust on the outside of the kurassier helmet. I would recommend some rust remover applied to some 000 steel wool. You will have to work away at this for quite awhile, but you can remove all of the surface rust this way without harming anything. I recommend a remover called Evapo-Rust. They have a company web site but I think it is available in many stores both in Canada and the US. These things were just polished steel originally so stop the process when you get some shine to it. PS...remove the helmet plate and spike base before beginning this process. Regards, Brian

The 000 or even 0000 steel wool is essential, as you don't want to scratch the surface if you can avoid it. Looks like there's some original paint on the trim, so that's really quite cool. Like they've all said, nice helmet indeed!

Thanks for all of the replies. I'll send updated pictures after I get more time to clean the 1915 up a little bit. It has been fun researching these pieces of history. Looks like i have a good start (lucky) on a new collection. Any further input on how to restore these (where to find missing parts) would be great.

Thanks
Dave
