Hello folks,

Last week I managed to visit the Austrian Army Museum (Heeresgeschichtliches Museum) in Vienna, just next to the South Train Station (Suedbahnhof). The Museum cover the Austrian Army and Navy from the 17th C up until 1945. I know it's not strictly on topic for this forum but there's enough 19th C and WW1 exhibits there to keep us all interested I think. Well worth a visit if you're ever in the area. See the website at http://www.hgm.or.at/

First off here's a few photos of Austro-Hungarian uniforms and headgear-

KuK Naval Officer. This frock coat was owned by Georg von Trapp, of "Sound of Music" fame!

There are of course loads more Austrian uniforms there and they've also got a few Imperial German items.... here we are back on topic-

A nice Bavarian

A Saxon Cap owned by KuK Franz Josef himself. Which Regt was he Colonel of? Was it an Uhlan Regt? I haven't got any reference books out here with me on my travels.

And some of Franz Josef's Austrian army uniforms. More photos to follow...

Chris,

a wonderful museum (and city) I have had the pleasure to visit on a few occasions.

Kaiser Franz Joseph was the Chef of 1. Ulanen-Regiment Nr. 17 "Kaiser Franz Joseph von Österreich, König von Ungarn".

Regards
Glenn

Bavarian non-fluted? Is that a problem? Please forgive my ignorance.

OK, Pointy, I did promise you some Tschapkas-

...and Polish in Austrian service!

Glenn I knew you must have been there from your excellent site http://www.austro-hungarian-army.co.uk but I wasn't expecting to see this there-

As far as I know your page on the Austro-Hungarians in Crete is the only online source that details these troops and their uniforms http://www.austro-hungarian-army.co.uk/troopscreta.htm

While we're on the subject of Austrian Tropenhelms, see these other two nice ones from Palestine-

No badge or cockade on this one...

ahtrophelm2pal.jpg

FJI badge on this one... whereas Peter Suciu's one previously posted on this forum has a K badge (Kaiser Franz Josef and Kaiser Karl, respectively). Peter Jung's Osprey books illustrate an Imperial black and gold cockade on the Tropenhelm. Has anyone seen proof of one of these?

Cheers

I know they're not quite Hauben but I was quite impressed by these Hapsburg palace guard helmets-

Mexican Palace Guards, they've got 12 of these on display (perhaps all that exist?).

Mexican Palace Guards?? Doing what in Austria?

The Mexican Palace Guard helmets of this era were made in Austria; Emperor Maximilian of Mexico was a Hapsburg. There is a least one in private hands that I know of. Later Mexican helmets were Pickelhauben made in Germany...

Thanks for sharing! Looks like a great museum.

RE: Georg Von Trapp's uniform: Unlike in the movie, he wanted to go into the navy again, but Maria put the halt on that. Also, HE was the soft hearted one and she was the task master. The family left Austria by train when they felt it was time to get out, no real drama involved in it.

Archduke Maximillian of Austria was the brother of Kaiser Franz Josef. He was talked into become Emperor of Mexico by Emperor Napoleon III of France and a group of Mexican monarchists. He reigned for 3 years and 70 days before being overthrown and executed.
