Austrian Wappen

Something I acquired many years ago. About 3 1/2 inches high and 3 inches wide.

I'll probably use it as the centerpiece of a little display of Imperial German and Austrian medals.

What type of headgear or other item would this have originally been used on?

It was probably for an Austrian Uhlan Tschapka, similar to this, However, I do not know that much about these, and can't be sure of the originality or attachment method on the back of it. Perhaps someone smarter than me will tell you something else, but that would be my take.

Hello Marcus,

Another option... a circa 1900 Austrian infantry officer's shako... this one pictured below in my collection for about 45 years...

Cheers,

David

The shako option actually seems much more probable
Hi!

Your measurements conform exactly to the size of the shako plate on the shako in my collection at 3.5 inches tall by 3 inches wide at its widest point... so I would agree with you that you do have an infantry officer's shako plate. Will look forward to seeing whatever display you build around this plate! I am sure it will be marvelously interesting!

Cheers,

David
