"Baden" Helmet

Greetings. Any thoughts on this one:

AUTHENTIC WORLD WAR I PRUSSIAN MILITARY IMPERIAL HELMET Item number: 7750277224
It has a Baden plate. According to the seller, the winning bidder declined to conclude the sale, and so has offered it to me. The plate does not look like high officer's quality, but over all it appears to be a nice helmet.
I look forward to your opinions.
Thanks.

Eric,
Caution. Often second chance offers are frauds. Just be careful. The wappen does seem small and I w0uld not touch it without seeing the back of the plate or the helmet shell without wappen. The chinscales are convex and there are oval rosettes. Hmmmm........ Someting is wrong with the way the stars are attached but I cannot see. How much does he want as the reserve was not met?

Hi Eric,
It was offered to me too, since the reserve price was not reached. I was not too much worried about the convex chinscales, which would suggest that this hat belonged to a Train officer but the condition is not great, and the plate does not seem quite right, as Joe noticed. It should be important to see the plate and chinscale attachments.

I'm agree with the size of the plate... it seems a bit too small. I've also got probems with another helmet who didn't reach the reserve price. I buy it at my highest bid... but never see the helmet! Be careful!

I noticed this one during the week and I thought that the basic shell looked OK but the plate seems to sit very low down and is there not an impression of another plate? As Joe says I'd want to see it with the plate removed, there could well be two lots of holes behind it.

Baden and Prussian plates are fairly easy to change with each other. I would want to examine the back of the plate to see if posts have been moved or perhaps even holes have been widened a bit. Extra holes of course would be a dead give away. I have even seen where a dremmel tool was used to convert a Baden OR's plate into an officer ie put some holes in the crown. I just noticed...no close ups of the front of the helmet everything taken from above and relatively far away. Looks suspicious to me especially as some have said how low that bandeau is sitting on the visor. Brian

I would strongly advise staying away from all e-bay 2nd chance offers. I lost the bid on a helmet last week... I have since been offered it 9 times by all different e-mails addresses. I wonder how many people get stung with this. E-bay should probably pull the plug on this, just way too open for fraude.

Pete

If anyone is contemplating accepting an eBay second chance offer I would strongly suggest that you first cntact the original seller through eBay's "ask the seller a question" to determine if the offer is legitimate. Do not respond to the email you got making the offer.
I have received several second chance offers and when I contacted the sellers as indicated, I learned in each case that there was no second chance offering made by the seller.

As Pete stated, it is best to ignore any second chance offers.

Hi

If you receive a 2nd chance offer on your mail then tjeck your ebay account. If you also have a new message with the same offer it should be ok. If there is no message it is a fake offer.

Doc

Gentlemen:
Thank you all for your wise advice. I contacted the seller, uticaebob, through the ebay website item description page to ensure that the "second offer" was legitimate, and received this response:
"I did not send you offer. I have offered it to the top bidder.
I would suggest that you forward the Email you received to Ebay. I have recently received spoof Email for my paypal account and they have a specific address to forward these Emails to. I think Ebay has the same thing. "

The moral: If the price is too good to be true, it isn't.

I have now received the bogus payment instructions from the bogus second offerer. For your information, he identifies himself as:
Robert Crawford
67-69, Abbeville Rd
London, SW4 9JW
United Kingdom
I reported the whole business to ebay, for what its worth.
Be careful in cyber space. I really miss the good old flea market when you could hold the item in your hand and know in an instant what it was.

regards to all.

Hi Eric,
Thanks for the advice. Has you know now, a 2nd chance offer is always a risk. Unfortunatly we have a lot of bad peolpe on the net. As you said,
I too really miss the good old flea market.
Otto

Eric, if you had to give your password to access that 2nd chance offer's email, change your password IMMEDIATELY. In my experience, that is what they are after. Corky

Yes, Corky is right, if you ever have entered your password on any e-mail that has come from ebay, it would be a good idea to change you password, and NEVER use the same pass word or even a variation on a paypal account. It is a good idea to never use a link on an e-mail, unless you have requested it. Always go to your "My ebay" page and check to see if the message is there, Doc Holliday has already pointed this out. It is not a good idea to use the pay now button on items that you have won (thinking now, I just paid for an item the easy way last week) It is possable for a spoofer to send a similar message. If they get you ebay password, they can change your password so you no longer have access, but if they get your paypal password, they can clean out your account if you are a varified member.

Wow Gus, I never thought that this whole thing was so dangerous. Thanks for the heads up. Brian

Gee Brain, I'll bet Margo kn ows this stuff, I know that I am the biggest paranoid on the forum, but most internet ID thieft starts with someone answering an unsolisted email. Unless you know the person who sent you the email, and you knew that it was coming, never give any information that you would not give to some one you knew was an ID thief. The world is not the scarey, just be careful
