Baden IR170

Good evening

I present to you my fourth pickelhaube Baden... It comes from an attic in the centre and its former owner passed the plate to the "mirror"

This helmet has a peculiarity: its 4 identical nails and not regulatory. They have the same size and attaches to the quarter turn. It has the same juice than other fittings

I would like to know if you've already seen this system? :-k

I do a thorough investigation of the nails (rivets)

Sans flash

The tip is very securely attached and it does not move... I turn the nail and it is attached to the quarter turn...

Hi Jupiter,
Nice salty (literally...) helmet. "Mirror", as a polishing compound, does not mean much to our American friends; the equivalent on this side of the pond should be Brasso.
Congratulations on your find.

Congrats, a very nicely marked helmet. I have never seen that system of spike base fasteners before. That is very special, is there any makers ink stamp in the top of the helme, so we could know who made it? It is very rare also to have the JR170 uberzug as well. Excellent!

And Uberzug..

Very nice! I personally believe the spike retainers are replacements (interesting ones at that), because you can see the imprints or shadows of the original split brads on the inside re-enforcement plate (maybe that's a replacement?). Anyway, a very minor issue for a nice helmet.

I have one question.
I thought these sort of helmets where not be called ersatz.
Thought only metal helmets where called ersatz because of the complete metal.
So it is correct to call also these helmets as ersatz. :?:

To be correct, Feldgraue lederhelm would be a better name, or just M 15, I agree.

This M 15 has a riveted strap and a fixed spike.
