This just arrived today. This is a British Home Service for the Royal Artillery... hence the ball on top (and the chain is the chin chain). :D

Being totally ignorant to Brit helms, is this an officer or other ranks helmet and what time frame would this be worn in?

Hi Dave--
This is an officer's pattern helmet, Model 1878, worn up until 1914. I don't have the exact time period on this example however.

Good catch on that. Correct, the 1902 Tudor Crown was used until Elizabeth II came to the thrown. The RA stopped using these helmets after WWI broke out.
 
A beautiful helmet, Peter, David said he knew that you would be very pleased with it. When I get my Lanarkshire Volunteer Artillery Blue Cloth I will post it.
BTW: my RAMC ball top Blue Cloth is also very small, perhaps the physical requirements for these service corps were not as stringent as those for the fighting arms. The Garrison Artillery, however, required only the best physical specimens even though it was not a popular posting.
