Could anyone provide advice/critique this Pickelhaube. Would it be a good purchase?

Would anyone have cockades to go with this for sale?

Hello,
The Bavarian M96 artillery helmets have spikes, never balls. Only the marking allows to identify it.
Finding a replacement spike is however easy.

This helmet never existed. It is an infantry helmet, which should have had a point. The Bavarian artillery model was an M1886 ‘with point’, until April 1916. The ball only appeared on the Bavarian M15 artillery helmet with iron-grey trim in April 1916.
-We should check whether there are any letters and numbers marked between the shell eyelets (on the inside) behind the faceplate, or under the neck cover.
-You need to make sure that it is not the faceplate that has been affixed to an artillery helmet from another state, such as Saxony, for example. You need a photo of the front with the plate removed, to see if there are any double holes.

To restore its coherence, the ball should be replaced by a point.

This is how the helmet should look CIMG8026.JPG

For information, here is a Bavarian artillery helmet, M1886/96, in use until the 1915 model with ball.

Here is the M86/15 of the Feld-Artillerie Bavaroise, modified after April 1915 by exchanging the fluted tip with the Prussian ball.

Finally, the model 16 Bavarian, in grey iron, for the foot artillery, either with a point (between late 1915 and April 1916) or with a ball, as before. Bay M16 2FsAR pointu.jpg

It's hard to keep things simple when they're so complicated...

Thanks very much for the detailed explanation.

I’ll try get more photos of the front plate and behind.

If this was originally an artillery helmet, would you be able to tell what state it was from or could there be multiple states that have the same ball?

I recognize this Helmet it sold yesterday in an Auction for 360 USD were you the high bidder?

If not I'm curious if someone else bought it and is offering it to you. I was second highest bidder on another helmet in this same auction and maybe they also bought that one. I would be interested in knowing if they will also be selling that as well.

Thanks in advance. John Josef

Congratulations and thanks for the information. I think you did good on this one when it arrives, and you can have a better look you can find out exactly what it started life as. It could end up being even more valuable.

I bid until it just doesn't make sense for me and the helmet I wanted just kept going up and up every time I raised my bid. Sometimes you can just feel that whatever you bid you're not going to win. With fees and shipping you just got to know when to stop. Lucky in my old age I'm finally able to walk away sometimes. ;)

Yes, absolutely.
Practically all the ‘Länder’ had this ball for the artillery, on their M95 model.
If you took a photo of the front, without the front plate, you could make out the ‘national’ insignia and identify the state. In the vast majority of cases, it was the Prussian eagle of the line.

It goes from no bids and turns into a frenzy! I was lucky to get this one. Looks to be in decent condition
