Bavarian Leib Pickelhaube

Yes, good decision. When there is only a single doubt, there are no doubts at all....Better return, ALWAYS.
If this helmet had showed a wearers name in it, one could have track him in the bavarian Kriegsstammrollen that are still existing. Then we could have checked his military carreer. Without this ultimate confirmation, better let it go!

It’s the Wappen. Charles’ new helmet has a 1896 Foot Troops Wappen, which was never worn by officers. A soldier in Mannschaften ranks could wear almost any combinations of components on a purchased Eigentums-helm except for two:
  • Pattern of Wappen
  • Pattern of Kokarden
The three patterns of Wappen all solid Neusilber (nickle silver)
  • 1886/87 Wappen (worn by all Troops and ranks),
  • M1896 Wappen Mannschaften for Foot Troops (never by officers)
  • 1914 Wappen for all Officers and all Mounted Troops.

I wonder what causes the empty places in the crowns of lions in some wappens. This is often the case in generals' and officers' wappens, and not at all in soldier's wappens. But general and officer wappens in lion crowns are also often filled.

Prussia for example had a general rule, for officers the crown of an eagle with empty places and for soldiers a full crown

Nice helmet, the kokarden on the last helmet is simply and older style that is perfectly fine! I have a post somewhere on this forum with all kinds of different variations of Bavarian Kokarden if you want to search for it. For some reason there are a lot of variations in Bavaria!

I wonder why there were some differences in the Bavarian army. Perhaps it was related to the person of King Ludwig II of Bavaria, who was anti-Prussian. He did not strive for the unification of the army on the model of Prussia, which is why the pickelhaube was introduced in the entire army only after his death. Therefore, some differences in wearing a pickelhaube were related to maintaining separateness from Prussia.
