What's with the spike? Isn't longer than the usual? A JZP metalhelme spike maybe?

Out of curiosity, how hard would it be to find a pair of M91 EM cockades for this helmet?

Looks ok to me, Bavarian Kokarden are not easy to find, but if you keep an eye out on German Ebay or occasionaly US ebay, they do show up from time to time.

Bond helmet?? Looks like it to me, that liner is sweet. If used at all, only very lightly. They do not come much better than that example Ron. I had one very similar...but alas, sold it! As Slim says an original Bavarian kokarde will come up for sale. They had the second largest contingent in the Imperial army next to the Prussians.

But doesn't that spike look disproportionate?
And by the way, did the M15 JZP & regular Pickelhaubes use similar spikes (same as the cockades & chinstraps)?

Hey Ron,
The spike is normal sized, the problem is one of perspective, the photo is taken from above with a wide angle lens, and that exagerates the size of the spike.

Gus, right as always! I went back to the pictures and this is due to the wide angle... They should read Tony's thread on how to properly shoot headgear!!
However the front visor side rivets look a bit loose.

Anyway, I still have a pending question: Did the M15 JZP & Regular Pickelhaubes use similar spikes (which would be the efficient way, same as for the cockades & leather chinstraps)?

Hey Ron,
I think they did use the same spike, you will often find standard spiks on the Kurassier helmets too, even though the correct spike for the Kurassier helmet has a different profile.

For me this one looks to be a war bond helmet with a spike base replaced and a JZP spike.
After closer look I think it's a normal spike.
Concerning the bavarian cockades : I don't know why but they are very rare.
Bavarian helmets are very collected.
You have more chance to have a bavarian helmet with both good cockades (Reich+Bavaria) than to have a bavarian cockade alone.
That's my experience.

Regards,

After a closer look at the pictures and confirming with the seller, it turned out the front visor stiches are loose although not detached and the visor side studs are loose as well...

Reichs kokardes are not very difficult to obtain, but a Bavarian state kokarde will take more time. Personally, I prefer ebay.fr over ebay.de for pickelhaube parts because there is less crap offered on the French ebay.

Best regards,

Edwin
