The pic is from the Militaria Fund Forum (http://www.militaria-fundforum.com/showthread.php?t=86995&page=2) and was taken at the Ingolstadt Bavarian Army Museum.

Amazing...never seen anything like those. It is incredible the lengths they went to to try and keep the spike helme alive in so many different applications. Brian

Ah! The first picture I see of that type. I think the Gesellschaft für Heereskunde described it once in their booklet. Maybe I find the article in their small online archive.

If I remember correctly, this was tested but never issued in quantity because the mountain troops found the Austrian hats to be more practical.

I found the source now, it is the book "Die feldgraue Uniformierung des deutschen Heeres 1907 bis 1918", part 1. It was published by the society mentioned above in 1998 at their centennial. They reference Kraus, ZfH Jg. 1978 (42).

It looks like the images show the same helmets from the museum.

Thanks for that additonal info and pics, Robert. I was wondering what the scroll said. Yes, I'm cetain those are the same helmets illustrated, the author Kraus, works at the Ingolstadt Museum. I guess, these may well be the only two trial ones ever made.

You're right Brian, it is amazing the lengths they went to, but what amazes me more is that new things like this still keep cropping up. Always learning...

Cheers
Chris
