Hello!
I´d like to show you my first Pickelhaube
it´s a Bavarian one, corps is vulcan fibre..
i´ve got it directly from a private Household... There is one thing im wondering... The spike cross is silver, the rest of the fittings are golden.. either the gold is completely gone or there is another reason for that?
Two of the Star screws are gone.. i fond one thread and nut inside the helmet...
and there is another thing... The Spike looks like it was hit by a bullet

Im courious of your opinions about this Pickelhaube!

Very nice looking helmet, and 100% original. Congratulations! =D> :thumb up:

The cross-base for the spike is made of zinc metal, and the gold color finish has come off over the years. This is common to find with wartime fittings on officer helmets.

Yes, it looks like the spike has been hit by a bullet.

Thank you Jonas.. i am very happy with this one.. i was only confused by the Kreuzblatt... the hole in the spike is another part..
 
That is perfectly legit you even can find an officer helmet that has a schubbekette with the same characteristics as seen on the kreutzblatt

As for the hole in the spike damn if he would have been a bit taller ,he would be doing "the long walk'
He was lucky i guess
 
If it is a bullet hole, je was a lucky guy indeed... then it must be a „long range shot“.. Otherwise the bullet would gone through the Spike i think
 
Possibly a "spent" bullet indeed, i.e. one at the end of its trajectory. It also may have been a "grazing shot", which is actually quite likely when we look at the particular kind of damage. Either way, Hesi, you have a truly wonderful first helmet here! Good find!

What I would do about it is... nothing! I wouldn't do any kind of restoration and/or replacement, really: I'd leave it "as is". Maybe dust it off with a soft cloth, that's all. It almost litereally breathes history!
 
Thank yo very much Jaap... I will leave her like she is.. for sure.. Maybe i ill replace the two missing Star Screws.. only a little of cleanig.. there are some little white dots.. i have to find out what it is and hope i can remove them.

The bullet hole is a kind of history of this Pickelhaube and i think not often to see...
 
Hess-What a great helmet to start with! Welcome to the forum. As everyone else has said totally original with some very interesting mid war discussion points. This is a kind of thing that makes you dig more. JR 16 for some reason is not that easy to find. Some regiments seem to be an abundance and others less so. I do not think it is a bullet hole – possibly somebody was playing with it but I am not sure we will ever know. Either way makes a great conversation. I think the important thing are the white dots which indicate some sort of mold. Brian and Tony and John probably have the corner on what the best treatment is. The good news is you asked – you showed pictures – you are very very welcome.
 
One more thing, I would bet that the spike has a bayonet lug type connection. As you were able to remove the spike you could take a picture of the top of the helmet without the spike on it. This seems to be something Bavarian. Bayonet spikes without M15 rosettes.

As i stated in my introduction post.. i´m a collector for over 40 years... so i earned the patience to look around and get the things i want.. maybe after years... i´m not the "wild rabbit" that must get his things the next day ... Quality needs time (and luck)...

anyway... im very very happy about my first one.. and it inspirated me to advance this line...

As i got this one from a private household.. maybe someone can tell me the value of this Haube?
 
i tried it.. but it is very strong fittet... so i´m afraid of breaking something.. I think it´s removable... but i don´t wanna try it...
 
I'll get laughed off of here for saying this, but the white dots on the outside of the helmet are not mold.

It's my understanding that the white dots are spider droppings/poo. :-" :o

A lot of us older collectors used to think the white spots found on some of these old helmets were paint specks, but apparently they are not splattered paint specs.
