Bavarian Officer Pickelhaube

For sure in don‘t laughing you out Alan... my first thougt was also it is paint.. but this Pickelhaube was „forgotten“ in an old stable.... so it male sense... should i try to clean it with a small amount of water? Or any other tips?

A great start to your pickelhaube collection Thomas, congratulations. Watch out...one haube usually leads to more! Regarding this Bavarian it is a mid to late war helmet due to the combination of zinc and brass fittings. Looking at the rear spine I would guess that it is zinc too (colour) but the gold finish remains. We find many of these helmets with different combinations of zinc and brass pieces. Regarding Joe’s questions, there is an officer style of helmet produced around 1915, where the spike neck twists off reducing the height of the helmet. The chin scales on this model are designed to fit over side posts similar to the ordinary ranks helmet issued in 1891. These 2 features were designed for wearing in the trenches. The reduction of height lessened the chance of being seen above the top of the trench and sniped (shot). The chin scales could be easily removed and replaced with the leather strap issued to the soldat.
