I just got this Bavarian Wappen in the mail today and I love it. What impressed me was how HUGE it was in comparison to Wappen for Other ranks. We're the helmet bodies so much bigger for officers/cavalry?
 
Hi Ed: In answer to your question.... Yes there is a size difference..... this is a model 1886 Bavarian wappen with the extra stems and leaves at the knees of the 2 lions. In 1896, they removed those and made the wappen smaller which fit the M 95 style shell better. However, there were different sizes of wappen to fit on smaller/larger helmets. The grey steel M 15 wappen also kept this smaller 1896 size. BTW the Bavarians did not adopt the pickelhaube until 1886, they resisted Prussian domination, symbolic or otherwise even during WW1.
