Bavarian Parade 1924

Well-known member
I got my postcard in the other day
Bavarian Army parade 1924
100 years Prince Regent-Luitpold
as we know some still wearing the old Imperial uniforms
and spiked helmets
However the troops are wearing the new uniforms and steel helmets
This card is from a series about an artillery unit
I am interested to know what is the shield on the steel helmets?
I asked a few friends , and one of them sent me this scan from a book
I am not sure it the shield is either one of these ?
Maybe some of our steel helmet collectors can tell me what shield this one is?
and the handwriting on the back of the card might be of help ?
Thanks

My guess would be its a parade past Bavarian Royals and Officers celebrating the 100th anniversary of the founding of the 1st Royal Bavarian Field Artillery "Prince Regent Luitpold" on 11 October 1824 in Munich. The Prince Regent died 12 years before this celebration.

The shield had to be something adopted by that unit, I'd doubt their post card would show another unit.

I've personally never seen a Helmet attributed to this specific unit but have seen several helmets from units of the Freikorps and later Stahlhelm units formed in Bavarian to fight the communist so this must be something similar it's really hard to be sure from the picture. 1924 is sure in the period for the Stahlhelm bund.

That reference is from Ludwig Baers book just to give credit.

Steve,

interesting line-up on he saluting line:

Prinz Joseph Clemens von Bayern
Prinz Alfons von Bayern
Kronprinz Rupprecht von Bayern
General der Artillerie a.D. Otto Ritter von Gyssling

Looks like a Major Müller next to General von Gyssling. I can't find immediately a Major Müller with a direct connection to 1. FAR but there were a couple of Bavarian field artillery Majore Müller.

Regards
Glenn

Steve,

the Infanterie-Leibregiment photos were taken on 6 July 1914 in the grounds of Schloß Nymphenburg in Munich. The photograph of the colour party was reproduced in the voluminous 1st World War history of the ILR.

In addition to the two officers named on the back of your photo; Leutnant Theodor Freiherr von und zu Fraunberg and Leutnant Otto Freiherr von Feilitzsch, the three NCOS are Sergeants Schulz, Gründl and Bott.

Baron Fraunberg survived the war, Baron Feilitzsch died on 22 July 1915 in the Tirol consequent to a grenade thrower accident.

I have seen the image with the 8 named individuals before but very useful to have all their identities confirmed.

1. Leutnant Theodor Freiherr von und zu Fraunberg
2. Oberst und Regiments-Kommandeur Friedrich Freiherr von Pechmann
3. Oberleutnant und Regiments-Adjutant Eberhard Freiherr von und zu der Tann-Rathsamhausen
4. General-Adjutant: Generalleutnant Wilhelm Walther von Walderstötten
5. König Ludwig III. von Bayern
6. Ordonnanz-Offizier: Oberleutnant Egon Freiherr von und zu der Tann
7. Ordonnanz-Offizier: Oberleutnant Gustav Freiherr von Perfall
8. General-Kapitän (Leibgarde der Hartschiere): General der Infanterie Felix Graf von Bothmer

Freiherr von Perfall was not a Flügel-Adjutant at this time but still an orderly officer with the uniform of the 1. Schweres Reiter-Regiment. He was a later Wehrmacht Generalleutnant.

Do you think you could please post a larger version of the group in front of the marquee (with the King shaking hands with the Austro-Hungarian officer)? Freiherr von Perfall is more clearly seen at the left of this image.

One more in the Bavarian Artillery series
Steve,

1. Oberst Emil von Chlingensperg auf Berg
2. Oberst Franz von Bomhard
3. Hauptmann Rudolf Freiherr von Laßberg
4. Oberst Rudolf Ritter von Xylander
5. Oberst Eugen Peringer
6. Kronprinz Rupprecht von Bayern
7. Prinz Franz von Bayern
8. General der Artillerie Otto Ritter von Gyssling
9. Oberst Hugo Raila.

A couple of observations on the captions; number 8 is clearly General von Gyssling and not Maj. Raila. Raila was in fact a retired Oberst.

Steve,

I believe the parade also involved the participation or presence of veterans of 7. FAR. Major Müller is Otto Müller, formerly of 7. FAR. Drawn up behind General von Gyßling and Major Müller is 6. (geb.)/A.R. 7 with Hauptmann Karl Wintergerst (later Generalleutnant) at its head.

The Prince Regent was also the „Inhaber“ of 7. A.R.

6./A.R. 7 of the Reichsheer was the tradition holder of both the former Royal Bavarian Field Artillery Regiments 1 & 7.

Great picture Steve I really love when Armies and units around the world celebrate their history through the keeping and the presentation of their uniforms and traditions. I even like listening to the old Military music and unit marches going back to Napoleonic Times.

I have some of the old military marches on CD as well. They are fun to put on and listen to while I sit and relax in my room!
