Bavarian Pickelhaube

Good Afternoon Everyone,

I am still very new to collecting pickelhauben and the more that I look the more "altered" ones there appear to be.

Would you give your opinions on the pickelhaube in the attached photographs.

There doesn't appear to be a brass trim on the peak, would this be correct or is it missing.

Also if you could recommend some which are for sale.

Thanks and regards,

Derek.View attachment 1

Welcome to the forum !

The best thing to do is to invest in good reference books !
This great website has a nice list of reference books !

btw...this one is Baden; not Bavarian...

Are there markings / stamps? (neck guard?)

Take your time...and learn...start with the "basics" of "Haubology"....here..... http://www.kaisersbunker.com/index2.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Francis,
Thank you for your reply and apologies for my error.
The photographs are the only information I have from an auctioneers website.
Regards,

Derek.

The helmet is an Ordinary Ranks (OR) reservist model 1895 from Baden. The white metal reservist cross bears the inscription that would normally be imprinted on the ribbon at the Gryphon's feet so therefore, a reservist haube. It is missing the front visor trim. The one cockade shown has no paint on it but you can see that there are 2 present. Chin strap looks original. An interior pic showing the state of the liner would be helpful. If there are markings on the rear visor then you could ID the Regt and see if it truly is a Baden helmet. So much stuff from the UK has been faked and messed with. If you are close enough, I would go and inspect the helmet at the auction house. If not, ask for more pictures. The plate looks good, the blank ribbon and cross, are correct.
