What do you think of this one gentlemen? :-k
And what's with the black 'stains' on the engraved MG Marking?

Looks like somebody wanted the stamped number to show up better. I dunno, looks okay to me, although the chin strap doesn't seem to match, which means the cockade is iffy as well. All in all, though, not too bad.

IMHO

hi,

it displays "14 JR", I have not seen before the figures being stamped in front of the letters ... but what do I know ! :?

Hi Pierre,
I've seen it in several of Joe's pics on so I don't think this is an issue (see http://cmtk3.webring.org/l/rd?ring=worldwari;id=37;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Epickelhauben%2Enet%2F" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;).
I just noticed however that the M95 chinstrap has different M91 end fittings which would mean it was tampered with, to say the least...

Sold for $847 which is slightly more than what I would've been willing to pay for such a (pre-war) pickelhaube given (1) the missing Bavarian Cockade and (2) the 'fishy' chinstrap (it could cost up to $200 to find a good strap + another $100 for the cockade!)

Agreed. Not really a rare helmet by any means, so... :-k [-(

I don't think that is too much at all but thats my opinion. Its well marked, in good condition and I think to some collectors the reserve cross models are more desirable. Maybe the winner had the proper chinstrap already? In general, I think if you are paying too much attention to the final price, then maybe you are worried too much about turning it around for a profit later.

Considering I've never sold a Pick. No, wait, I sold one to a friend for the price I paid, then bought it back 20 years later... So, I don't think that's the case at all. It's just that this hobby is getting very, very expensive and I'd like to purchase helmets without dropping nearly a grand or more on each. To me, that helmet went for almost twice what it's worth (but then that's IMHO) and my opinion isn't too realistic these days.

In eBay land, though, prices--at least for helmets--seem to be higher than in other places. Bidders seem to get carried away about like they do at face-to-face auctions.

True and I've been guilty of that as well on small items. Otherwise, I set my top bid, then usually keep it there (Unless I do my first bid low, then move up to my real top bid). I think the mentality is, "It's just for this one thing.", when in fact, they're not only forfeiting their opportunity to use that money for something else; they're also inflating prices. Something like this happened in the military vehicle market with Stuart tanks. They were at between $15,000 and $50,000 depending on condition until some mutton brain on ebay bid $130,000 for one and then the prices for one went through the roof... so much for poor old Ron getting his Stuart. Oh well, they're too expensive to keep anyway. :)
I agree though, that if somebody really wants that one helmet for their collection, they'll bid higher than normal and I've done that as well.

For example:

Used to be a $40 - $50 helmet. :/ Hopefully, nobody will fall for the price.

Not to mention the chinstrap & cockades are replicas as the sellers says ("la jugulaire et cocardes ne sont pas origines")!! :x

Besides, what with the 1917 date?? :-?

Yeah thats bad. Wait a week and another one of those will pop up in better condition on Ebay and probably go for a lot less.

Forgive me for asking but when was the price of a M15 helmet $40 - $50? This must have been 30 years ago :D
