Bernhard Stoewer. 1st Squadron Hussar Regiment No 13.

Bernhard Stoewer was a First Lieutenant in the 13th Hussar Regiment based in Diedenhofen. He was seriously injured in 1914 and his bayonet was taken back to Australia by an Australian soldier. I now have this bayonet. It was personalised with the logo of the Stoewer brothers' car company (Stettin). I am wishing to find more details of his injuries. He did recover. Can anyone help me?

presumably he did recover. According to Verlustliste 60 of 2 October 1914, he was "lightly" wounded. He was promoted to Rittmeister der Reserve effective 1 October 1914. He survived the war and was granted permission to wear the uniform of HR 13 per order 22 November 1922.

I really do appreciate the research that you have done for me. How comprehensive is the Verlustliste you have access to? Is it possible that Bernhard was injured twice? I ask this because: 1. family anecdotes say he was hospitalised for many weeks. 2. He retired from work in 1920 due to a health problem. Before the war, he was a very healthy sportsman. 3. The fact that he lost his bayonet might suggest that he was more than “lightly” injured.

Can you tell me where I can access the Verlustliste? Maybe I can do the research and save you the effort.
