I managed to track down the hard to find book Coberturas Militares Portuguesas 1740-1918 by Pedro Soares Branco. I highly recommend this book, and it was worth tracking down.
It has a great section on spiked helmets of Portugal, as well as a section on tropical sun helmets and a small section on the steel helmets used by Portugal in World War I.
The spiked helmet section includes more pattern helmets than I knew existed beginning with the Model 1885, and interestingly the Portuguese appear to have followed the British practice of using tins for storage and transport of the helmets.
