On the Wehrmacht Awards Forum a member has posted a photo and asked questions about it that perhaps someone from here with more knowledge than I could answer. It's located at http://www.wehrmacht-awards.com/forums/showthread.php?p=2677914&posted=1#post2677914 Basically it's a photo of a Landwehrman in a feldbluse wearing metal insignia on the collar X over 17 and he's wearing a Schirmmütze with the death's head on it. They guy that posted it thinks the fellow is from Braunschweigisches Husaren-Regiment Nr.17 because of the metal 17 on his collar, but I'm thinking he's an infantryman.

Thanks to Tony for going to the WAF forum and setting me straight! The soldier was Landsturm, not Landwehr!

Cool Photo! This gentleman is definitely from 3 Landsturm Infantry Ersatz Battalion X17. Formed in September 1914, the unit was assigned to the general command of X Army Corps. They were centered at Harburg.

What is difficult in my mind is determining which units wore some sort of recognition of the minor states such as Braunschweig. No problem in the prewar active units but once mobilization hit...

In the land of the Reserve Infantry Regiments I think there were four separate battalions one each from four different reserve infantry regiments that wore some Braunschweig type articles.
In the Landsturm world I think battalions:X13, X14, X17, X20, X30, X38,and X39 all try to wear some sort of Braunschweig identification. Based on the hand me down nature of some Landsturm units I am not sure who actually did or even had the equipment to do it.

There is a little study on Landsturm here:http://www.pickelhauben.net/articles/Landsturm.html
