Brunswick Hussars 17 - Advice?

This is a bear skin hat that my great grandpa brought back from France after WW1. He called it a “Death Head Hussar”. My Mom has kept it safely in storage since he gave it to her as a teenager.

Folks on Reddit and Wehrmacht Awards Forum seem to think it's from "Brunswick hussar regiment 17" and directed me here for more information. We'd love to have it authenticated and/or appraised, but don't know the first thing about how to get this done. Any advice?

It appears to me to be a correct Private purchase helmet .It has an officers skull ( Totenkopf )
I would ask Tony Schnurr to speak about the skull.
He has made a study of these . I can't see a photo of the kokard .
The 2 loops should be yellow
The field badge appears to a Prussian enlisted one , which is not correct .
If everything else is correct it is a very nice example
and will get a lot of interest from collectors
you will get offers from collectors
Let's see what the other members have to say

These Colbaks are the subject of a lot of tinkering. On the other hand, many were remade after the war by German manufacturers for film, theater, veterans' ceremonies, and even for the traditional detachments of the Reichswehr, Wehrmacht and then the Bundeswehr.
Yours is certainly composite, with "officer", "non-commissioned officer" and "troop" elements. You'll have to check whether the wicker frame is made of round or half-round strands.
