My guess is that it was probably period done. Probably painted on the boat ride home.

Chris Armold, whom I introduced to a couple of you guys at SOS, wrote a couple of books on American helmets. And he had quoted an article in one of his books on how there was a cottage industry in 1919 to paint helmets as the troops headed home.

I would bet 70% (probably more) of the US M-1917 helmets that have the divisional insignia were painted on the way home. And I bet this is similar case. Wouldn't have been done by the Germans I assume.
